Photogamer Challenge #15 Superhero - The Beginning!

Posted May 25th, 2007 in Challenges | 3 Comments »

This is the first of a three part challenge to tell a story in photos. For this week and the two weeks following, photogamers will experiment with creating a narrative photographic superhero story.

Stay with me, this is going to be super awesome rad and it won’t even be that hard!

So this week. You’re going to take 5 pictures that will begin the story.

Photogamer Superhero Ninja

You’ll need a hero. Think this out. It can be you, or a stuffed animal, or a real animal or a friend. The thing is, you’re going to need the hero for the next three weeks of challenges so it should be you or someone you live with or a co-worker. Your hero is going to transform from being a seemingly normal person to someone with some sort of super power… and costume! Go as crazy as you want here or keep it cool and subtle. if you’re into red tights or if you’re into the superpower of using paperclips as throwing stars, hey, it’s all cool. What super hero is inside you? What costume elements do you have lying around? You’ll need a mask, or at least a snazzy hat! Why not be a ninja superhero? Here’s a link to making a ninja mask! - Link

1. Establishing Shot: Show a photo of the outside of the house/apartment/barn/missile silo where you’re story will take place. This is straight forward, it’s like when they show the cafe in Seinfeld.

2. Meet the Hero: Your hero is in civilian disguise. This is a photo of the hero eating breakfast in an ordinary place.. This is like when Superman is Clark Kent or Spiderman is Peter Parker. This is an ordinary photo of an ordinary person doing something ordinary… eating breakfast! (unless your hero is a stuffed animal or lizard or something)

3. Close up detail: In this photo take a close up that includes the eyes. Give a hint that the hero senses something wrong by showing the forehead all crinkled and the eyes looking to the side as if sensing something.

4. The call: Take a photo of your hero on a phone call with news of an upcoing catastrophe. You should decide now what catastrophe your hero faces. Is a super villain on the loose? Is a cat stuck in a tree? Did someone lose their glasses? Has the hero’s significant other been kidnapped? Make the face of your hero reflect the severity of the situation!

5. Get Ready: Clark Kent would go into a phone booth. Spider man puts on his spidey costume. Your hero needs to get ready for the upcoming facedown with danger. If you are going to be a ninja, this would be the moment to show your hero putting on the nina mask.

Heads up: The first photo of next week is going to be of your hero arriving on the scene of catastrophe in costume!

Super Bonus: Use a program like Comic Life or photoshop and make your photos into a page of a comic book with thought bubbles and everything!

You can do it, the world needs you to do it… or else! When you’ve got your pictures up, post them to the photogamer flickr pool. Tag all of these photos with photogamer and superhero.

Once you’ve got all five post a note so we can go see them! - Link

Photogamer Challenge #14 Maker Faire!

Posted May 17th, 2007 in Challenges | No Comments »

This weekend is Maker Faire and Cyenobite suggested a Maker Faire challenge. You don’t have to be here to do these challenges although if you’re in the San Francisco area, how can you resist! (Disclosure: I work for Make: Magazine.)

Cyenobite says:

Hey yeah! How many photogamers are going to the maker faire? I’ll be there too (Sunday only). We should all wear a red rose or something ;)
Challenge ideas? 1) A Robot 2) Something with an LED 3) A plushie (or soft handcrafted animal). 4) a concession that you ate 5) Bonus: Something you made
(These could also be completed by those photogamers not able to make it to the maker faire)

Game on! If your not at the faire and can’t get concession food, then get some junk food or take out from somewhere!

Post your photos to the photogamer flickr group. If you get all five, post them to the winner’s circle and if you’re at Maker Faire, come find me and introduce yourself as a photogamer!

Photogamer Nijocamus made a photo where she overlayed the photo she was copying over a picture of herself. The result is a super cool photo! - Link

There are still photos to claim from the first face, but I think it’s important to have a female face too.

Of course any sex can choose any part of either painting and copy it as a photograph!

I’m a little worried about not getting them all done, so Sunday is a free for all!

Here’s the set of painting bits to copy! - Link

Challenge #13 Collaborative Collage

a4 My part A4

This week’s challenge is to choose a section of a drawing from this set and copy it as a photograph. When it’s done, we’ll find a way to put it back together!

When you choose your section, leave a comment saying that you chose it (so no one else picks it). Then copy it as a photograph and upload using the same title to flickr.com/groups/photogamer and when we have them all copied, we’ll put them back together. It’s a collaborative collage!

Note: Female drawing coming soon! Send me a suggestion if you have an idea of a good drawing! Update: got it!

Photogamers ventured into the world on 5 quests to take photos!
Tall tree blues
Global Hermit completed the quest to find the tallest tree and take a picture of it. I love the sunburst effect and the way the sky gets bluer towards the edges of this photo!

photogamer 12 recordDoctor Who
It was impossible to choose between these records… so here’s a tie between L. Marie’s Dr. Who and nice-diver’s Devo.

photogamer_hole.JPG
Quest 3 was to find a hole and make your camera go click. Randigirl got creative and found a hole in her dad’s nose!

hiding spot
Mil8 found a hiding spot and documented it… for a dog!

“Tom was driving to what was supposed to be the last ski weekend of the season when an 18-wheeler rear-ended his car. This scar (as well as the others on his head) were caused by the rear windshield when the entire back of the car was pushed up so it was basically a two seater.

Jamie (holding Tom’s hair aside) was in the passenger seat of the car, she was bruised and sore, but nothing too major. Nobody was in the backseat (thankfully).”

Congrats to the super winners and everyone who participated in Challenge #12. Photogamers rule! I can’t wait for the next challenge, I’ve got something a bit different planned!
